Research Emphasis

The research efforts of the Molecular Ecology and Epidemiology of Plant Pathogens laboratory in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Arkansas are focused on the interactions of fungal plant pathogens with rice, sorghum and Aeschynomene. The applied projects in the laboratory examine the epidemiology of selected pathogens and the effect of seed infection and seed transmission of several important pathogens on yield and seed quality of rice, corn and sorghum. The more basic projects in the lab include characterizing and determining the relationships of the lineages or strains within important pathogen groups with genomic fingerprints and identifying and determining the influence of physiological and genetic determinants within several host species (rice, Sorghum and Aeschynomene) infected by Colletotrichum sublineolum, C. gloeosporioides or Pyricularia oryzae that influence the epidemiology (fitness, aggressiveness) of the disease and that cause changes in population structure of races or lineages during epidemics. A project on biological control of weeds is maintained within the above projects to provide better understanding of COLLEGOTM, the first bioherbicide developed and used in row-crop agriculture in the world to control weeds.
